About the Strategy
Our GHG Measurement Strategy lays out our standardized approach for in-house monitoring, reporting, and verification of our grant program’s GHG reduction contributions. The ultimate goal is to empower high-impact efforts that contribute to halting and reversing the effects of climate change by:
We estimate the GHG reduction potentials of prospective grants to guide application decisions and identify key support areas within our funding priorities.
We calculate the actual GHG reductions attained by completed projects, compared to expected outcomes to support mutual reflection, understanding of lessons learned, and future planning both for ourselves and grantees.
We believe transparency is the impetus for leadership and trust, while building motivation and engagement towards achieving a shared vision.
We embed a climate lens throughout or grant program to maximize synergies and co-benefits.
How Does it Work?
Our in-house climate change experts calculate each project’s emissions reductions as part of our application decision process, and to reflect on attained impacts after project culmination. We undertake a flexible and adaptive approach with each of our partners, following standardized methodologies and protocols. We base our calculations on activity details you provide in our application and reporting forms, combined with in-house research on local contexts and opportunities. As part of our analysis, we may reach out to you to clarify assumptions or to request further details to support our calculations. Here is a snapshot of how GHG quantification is embedded in our grant lifecycle:
Our climate change experts prepare general estimates on the potential order-of-magnitude GHG reductions based on your brief proposal description.
Our climate change experts conduct in-depth calculations based on activity details and expected targets described in your proposal. At this stage, we may reach out to you to clarify assumptions or to request further details.
Successful applicants are notified of the decision.
Our climate change experts update calculations based on updated activity details and attained metrics described in your project-end report.
Our GHG Principles
Our GHG measurement efforts follow 8 guiding principles:
- Transparency
- Accuracy
- Consistency
- Completeness
- Comparability
- Collaboration
- Improvement
- Sustainability
Yes! We understand climate action requires a vast array of complimentary approaches that may not directly lead to GHG reductions now, but lay the foundation enabling the transition to a low-carbon, resilient economy. If you have a great project that meets our funding themes, put in an expression of interest and if our committee is interested in learning more we will be in touch.
Yes! We estimate GHG reductions in-house for all prospective and selected projects. However, if you have – or are able to – prepare your own estimates, we welcome your own calculations as supporting material to gain a better understanding of the project.
No! We calculate actual GHG reductions after a project is completed as a mutual reflection exercise to promote a reciprocal understanding of project strengths and weaknesses, extract lessons learned, and plan for future improvements.
If you meet the eligibility criteria, learn about our application process.
